This Vicarious Life is a collection of short stories, interviews, and photo essays featuring people immersed in their careers, hobbies, and passions.
My name is Stephanie Powell and I’ve been obsessed with telling stories for as long as I can remember.
A self-taught photographer who studied journalism and creative writing in college, I’ve worked as an editor and freelance writer for magazines such as 5280, Fort Collins Magazine, Her Sports + Fitness, Oxygen, Pool & Spa Living, Sunset, and Women’s Health. For years I wrote travel and adventure stories, including pieces about nighttime white water rafting, llama trekking, wine making, and orienteering.
While covering those topics, I met some fascinating and inspiring people. People who, when I left them, always left me thinking... What is it like to be them? How does it feel to be a wine maker? A park ranger? A white water guide? My curiosity didn't stop there though. It kept going. What about a bee keeper, I wondered. Or a baker? Or a farmer?
In an attempt to answer those questions, I started This Vicarious Life. I job shadow professionals, photograph people at work, and talk to folks about their hobbies and passions. All to experience what it's like and live vicariously in other people's shoes, even if it's just for a day or a few hours.
Most of my subjects are people with careers or interests I personally find fascinating and simply want to know more about. That said, my interests run the gamut from architects to zoologists. So if you have an idea for a piece or know someone with an interesting story to share, I'd love to hear about it. You can get in touch here.
